Title:
Conjugate points in fluid motion

Speaker:
Gerard Misiolek

Abstract:
In the 1960's V. Arnold showed that a flow of an ideal fluid traces out a geodesic curve in the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. He posed a number of questions concerning existence and properties of conjugate points along fluid flows. After describing the relevant geometric background I will give a brief overview of some more recent results concerning the structure and distribution of these points.
