Title:
EFTs for collective excitations: low energy physics for the high energy physicist

Speaker:
Angelo Esposito

Abstract:
I will discuss different aspects of the effective field theory approach to phases of matter. First I will introduce the central ideas and the rules of the game, with particular emphasis on the role played by broken symmetries. I will then present one possible phenomenological application of these techniques, i.e. the study of the interaction between light dark matter and the phonon of superfluid He-4. Finally, I will conclude with some more formal developments. In particular, I will discuss some first steps towards the study of solids solely from the properties of their scattering amplitudes.
