Does Heegaard Floer homology tell us anything about Heegaard genus?

Abstract:
There is a naive invariant of 3-manifolds defined using Heegaard splittings: the Heegaard genus. It is natural to ask if this invariant is related to Heegaard Floer homology. We will discuss this question, and explain the unexpected relationship of Heegaard Floer homology with a quite different branch of 3-dimensional topology. This talk is based on joint work with Zhongtao Wu.
