Title:
Quantum non Demolition Measurements, Martingales and Exchangeable Variables
Speaker:
Abstract:
More than 85 years after the discovery of the fundamental laws of quantum mechanics, the meaning of quantum measurement is still debated. The notion of measurement itself covers a wide range of different concepts. Recently, simple and elegant experiments which say something on the nature of quantum measurement have been carried. We shall describe these experiments with in the general context of measurement in mind and explain how their interpretation is closely related to some cornerstones of classical probability theory, especially Bayesian estimates and martingale convergence theorems. In conclusion, we shall show that deFinetti’s theorem on exchangeable random variables is one of the natural explanations for the universality and robustness of quantum measurement.
