Why we are excited about the LIGO results, a cosmologist’s perspective

Abstract:
In February, the LIGO experiment announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the collision of two black holes. I will present a pedagogical discussion of gravitational waves and black holes. Then I will discuss the LIGO instrument, the detected signal, and some of the implications, highlighting the aspects of this detection that I find most exciting.
