Title:
Towards the classification of gapped phases of matter

Speaker:
Ryan Thorngren

Abstract:
In this talk I will explain the framework of invertible tqft and describe consequences of the cobordism assumption in the classification of ground states of gapped nondegenerate Hamiltonians. I will discuss applications to understanding charges of line and surface operators, spectral flow, decorations, and more. I will philisophize a bit about the Atiyah-Segal perspective and how it can be physically interpreted. I will outline many open problems in the theory some of which I think we are close to resolving, others which may take a bit longer.
