Title:
The Nematic Fractional Quantum Hall State and the interplay of Geometry and Topology

Speaker:
Eduardo Fradkin

Abstract:
I will discuss the interpolay of geometry and topology in fractional quantum Hall fluids. I will show in suitable circumstances (satisfied in some experiments) that these fluids have low energy collective degrees of freedom which behave an effective dynamical metric. A quantum phase transition occurs at which rotational invariance is broken spontaneously and nematic order ensues. The nematic declinations, topological excitations of this phase, act as centers of curvature which carry electric charge. I will also discuss the related nematic phase in compressible (metallic) phases of these fluids, and comment on their reaction with the paired Hall states.
