Mathematical foundations of topological quantum computation

Abstract:
In this expository talk, we will review the mathematical formalism of topological quantum computation, beginning with simple models such as Kitaev's toric code and explaining the relation of this with topological quantum field theory, modular categories and quantum groups. No prior knowledge of modular categories of quantum groups is expected - we will proceed slowly, trying to avoid too much "abstract nonsense".
