Holography and Entanglement Decadal Survey

Abstract:
Just about a decade ago Ryu and Takayanagi proposed an amazing relation between areas of geometric surfaces and von Neumann entropy of reduced density matrices. This relation is the basis of the holographic entanglement entropy story which has since burgeoned into a major research enterprise. I will describe the basic elements of their ideas and how we have come to view entanglement as a key to unlocking the holographic map. To be sufficiently general, I will focus on the broad principles and lessons learned in the past decade and offer some thoughts on things yet to be understood.
