Extended Geometries in String Theory

Abstract:
String theory exhibits new symmetries and dualities that are not present in Einstein's theory of general relativity and that, therefore, are not manifest when formulating string theory as an extension of the Einstein equations by new fields and higher derivatives (so-called $\alpha'$ corrections). I will outline a research program that introduces extended geometries and formulates string theory with generalized geometric objects such that the emergence of hidden symmetry groups upon compactification on tori (including O(d,d) and the exceptional groups E_7 and E_8) becomes manifest. Then I will discuss three particular research directions within this framework:
