Moving the CFT into the bulk

Abstract:
What cutoff in the CFT corresponds to the radial cutoff in the dual bulk spacetime? This is a key question in the study of the holographic renormalization group. We propose that (at least in 2D) the cutoff on the field theory side is implemented by the $T\bar{T}$ deformation of the original CFT dual to the full AdS gravity theory. In recent work by Zamolodchikov and others, a powerful toolkit was developed to analyze $T\bar{T}$ deformed theories. We exploit these result to provide a quantitative check of the proposal: we compute the signal propagation speed, energy spectrum, and thermodynamic relations on both sides of the duality. In all cases, we obtain a precise match.
